These figures are based on an equal payment plan that I was under to make my energy bills fit my budget. There are a few things to note. If you look at the highlighted section labeled "Average Daily kWh" usage you will see that this house went from using 60 kwh per day to 44 kwh per day representing a 25% reduction. The average temperature for the month of June was the same (77 degrees) for both years. Also, there was a 10% rate increase from Progress Energy in 2009, otherwise the money saved would have been greater.
Here is the data for the same house for the month of July 2009 compared to July 2008. There was a nearly 27% decrease in total energy usage per day! Note also that the outside temperature data between the two years is identical for the month of July. Studies show that if everyone in the USA reduced their home energy use by only 15% we would:
- Slow global warming: By displacing the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity, an 15% decrease would reduce carbon dioxide CO2 emissions by 11 percent below business-as-usual levels, equivalent to taking more than 25 million cars off the road.
- Reduce energy bills: A 15% decrease in energy use would lower natural gas and electricity prices and save more than $100 billion for American consumers.
- Strengthen energy security: A 15% decrease in home energy use can reduce projected imports of liquid natural gas (LNG) from producers in unstable regions.
